Bro Matures Testimony
I asked brother A (a JW elder) if he could clarify the interpretation of a Bible teaching that Jehovah’s Witnesses follow. Both my wife and I have been loyal Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 50 years but had always struggled to understand the logic of shunning someone just because they had made a mistake or had sinned due to them being human, after all we all sin many times a day. He said we have to teach these people a lesson and show them how Satanic they are when they break our rules. He quoted me two scriptures from 2 John 1:9–11 and Matthew 18:15-17.
I said to him. Doesn’t the John scripture refer to the Antichrist or those who reject Jesus Christ and refuse to accept his teachings, and didn’t Christ teach us to forgive our brothers and make allowance for their imperfections. Matthew 6:9,10. I suggested he may perhaps be misapplying this Bible passage. Brother A got very angry with me. Are you questioning the Governing Body rules, he asked. I was very shocked and confused by his stern response. I thought maybe he was having a bad day and gave it no more thought. But later that same week things started to get very weird.
Brother A, without prior notice or invitation, turned up at my place of work with another elder,
Brother B. Both were dressed as if they were just going to The Kingdom Hall. They came into my office and interrupted an important meeting I was having with a customer. My employer was not amused.
We need to talk with you about you questioning the Governing Body interpretation of scripture they said. We are here to invite you to attend a Judicial hearing at the Kingdom Hall. Please bring your wife with you on Wednesday evening at 7.00pm. When asked what we were being accused of
Brother B said we were causing unrest in the congregation. I asked him if my asking a question about a Bible teaching I was unsure about was wrong in view of the Bible saying at Acts 17:10,11
that it was considered Noble Minded to carefully examine the teachings to make sure they are correct. I politely declined the invitation to attend a judicial hearing as we had done nothing wrong. They asked me a number of times if I understood the seriousness of my position and that we were becoming Apostate in our thinking. I wondered why my wife was also being labelled an apostate for something I had allegedly done. I thanked them for their concern and they left.
A few weeks later, without any further conversations or notification from either Brother A or B an announcement was made at my congregation that both myself and my wife were to be marked in line with the scripture at 2 Thessalonians 3:6. This meant the members of the congregation were to cease having any further contact with us other than when we were attending church. We were horrified because we were being shunned for something we hadn’t done and they had misquoted the Bible once again to show the reason for their actions. As a result of the way we were treated we stopped going to this Kingdom Hall and started to look for an alternative.
What has been the outcome? The congregation elders contacted our two daughters (also Jehovah’s Witnesses) who live many miles away from us and have told them we have been marked and are to be considered as bad associations. 1 Corinthians 15:33. Both our daughters have since written to us and told us they don’t want any further contact with us until we repent from our Apostate behaviour and ask for forgiveness. This includes our four grandchildren. They have not allowed us to explain our version of events and we have not been disfellowshipped or excommunicated from the church as they cannot find any evidence from anyone who will confirm we have acted in a way that caused any unrest. This does not seem to matter however, as due to the fear of reprisal from the elders, none of our former congregation friends or family will now communicate with us. We have now ceased being Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Do you think these are the actions of a Christian Religion? I will leave you to decide.
